🏫
Gem
Gem)
🧰
Skill
| Gems | Skills | |
|---|---|---|
Skill 的三招
①
@lesson-plan
@tiered-practice
@exit-ticket
✅ 在 Gemini app(gemini.google.com)建的
- 會自動轉成 Skill(教育帳號:2027/6/1 或之後)
Gem
Skills(Gemini app)
- Gemini Notebook:
學生自己的 Skills(學校開放後)
Gems
2026/10/13
教育帳號的 Gemini app 開放 Skills(Gems 仍可建立和使用)。 Gem
2026/11/17
Gems
Skill
(Create manually)
02
Create with Gemini
Skills?

🎓 Gems vs. Skills: what's the difference?
One analogy to get the idea, then how to use Skills well in your teaching.
🏫
A Gem is like a specialist classroom
- Each Gem is its own separate chat room
- To use it, you have to "walk into that room" (open that Gem)
- You can only be in one room at a time
🧰
A Skill is like a procedure card you carry with you
- Pull it out in any chat by typing
@ - When the conversation matches, Gemini uses it automatically
- You can use several cards at once
💡 The instructions themselves don't change. What you wrote for a Gem can become a Skill almost word for word. The real differences are how you call it up and whether you can combine them. The only new thing to write is one sentence saying when to use it.

Three moves Skills can do
①
@ to call it up
Type @ in any chat and the menu lists your skills—click one to apply it. Planning next week's reading lesson? Type @exit-ticket and it continues with three exit-ticket questions—no new Gem, no re-pasting the text.
②
Automatic
You don't even need @. If the description says "Use when the teacher needs a rubric," just saying "make a rubric for this report" applies it automatically. That's why the description is the heart of a Skill—the Convert and Build tabs in this tool help you write it.
③
Combos
Chain several skills in one chat: build the lesson plan, split practice into three levels, then write the exit ticket. A Skill's instructions can even name other Skills to make it a routine.
🔗 Combo example: a lesson-prep pipeline in one chat
@lesson-plan
Lesson plan
@tiered-practice

@exit-ticket

💡 When you type @, the menu shows both Skills and connectors (Google Docs, Drive, Calendar, Keep and more)—make sure you pick the right one. If you haven't created any skills yet, the menu shows only a single "Skills" entry, not a list—create or add one and it will appear. With lots of skills, click See all skills.
⚠️ Easy to miss: where did you create your Gem?
Gems for yourself and Gems for students are headed down two different paths.
✅ Created in the Gemini app (gemini.google.com)
- Converts to a Skill automatically (education accounts: on or after June 1, 2027)
- It arrives as a draft—review and activate it to start using it
- Want to start early or improve it? → the "Convert a Gem" tab
🚫 Assigned to students in Google Classroom, or created through an LMS
- Including Gems created via Gemini LTI in Canvas, Schoology or Moodle
- Will not convert automatically, and Skills can't be used inside Classroom or an LMS
- These Gems stop working from June 2027
- → Move to Guided Learning or Gemini Notebook in Classroom (see below)
Three situations, three tools
👩🏫
Your own planning and admin
Use Skills (Gemini app)
- Lesson planning grounded in your curriculum and standards
- Differentiation: scaffolds and tiered practice in one go
- Formative assessment: turn readings, slides or PDFs into quick quizzes
- Class newsletters, parent notices, admin memos
🧑🎓
Students use it in class, with you watching
Use Guided Learning / Gemini Notebook in Classroom
- Guided Learning: locked to your materials (up to 10), guides with questions instead of giving answers (coming soon to Classroom)
- Students get a focused view with no new chats; you see class dashboards, engagement trends and individual transcripts
- Gemini Notebook: turns handouts, slides and videos into study guides, flashcards, mind maps and Audio Overviews
- Students get read-only sources; you see who opened it and who started a conversation
🎒
Students' own learning
Students' own Skills (once your school enables them)
- Exam prep: turn class notes into practice quizzes and flashcards
- Hard texts: plain-language summaries and relatable analogies
- Essay feedback: thesis, argument flow and mechanics
- 💡 Teaching students to write a good Skill is an AI-literacy lesson in itself
※ Gemini tools in Classroom need a Google Workspace for Education account and must be enabled by your admin; personal accounts can't use them.
📅 Timeline for education accounts
2026/9/30
Skills roll out to personal accounts; education users keep using Gems
2026/10/13
Skills roll out in the Gemini app for education users (Gems still work). Personal accounts can no longer create or edit Gems
2026/11/17
Personal-account Gems auto-convert to Skills; for education users the Gems entry point moves to the settings menu (still usable)
2027/6/1+
Education Gems auto-convert to Skills; Gems are no longer available in the Gemini app, Classroom or Gemini LTI
※ Based on Google for Education's 2026 transition guide. Actual availability depends on Google's announcements and your admin's settings.
Getting the best results: 7 tips
Build for repeatable tasks
Build monthly-newsletter, not october-parent-newsletter.
Use lowercase, action-word names
e.g., build-lab-rubric—when you type @, you can tell what it does at a glance.
Start the description with "Use when…" plus phrases you actually say
e.g., "Use when I ask to 'create a lab rubric' or 'build an experiment scoring guide'." Gemini relies only on the name and description to decide.
Avoid overlapping Skills
If two Skills both "make questions," Gemini won't know which one to use.
Spell out the output format
e.g., "Always format as: 1) Objective, 2) 15-minute activity, 3) 3-question exit ticket."
Say what NOT to do
e.g., "Keep sentences under 15 words, always include sentence starters for English learners, and avoid jargon."
Tell it to ask about missing details
e.g., "If I forget to state the grade level, ask me before creating the materials."
The "Build from Scratch" tab already walks you through all of these.
4 ways to create a Skill
01
Start from scratch (Create manually)
Fill in the name, description and instructions yourself. This tool's Convert and Build tabs prepare exactly those three fields.
02
Create with Gemini
Gemini guides you step by step—handy when you're not sure yet what you need.
03
Customize a recommended skill
Pick one under "Recommended" and make it yours, e.g., match-your-writing-style learns your voice from your writing in Workspace.
04
Upload a file
Upload a .md file, plain text, a PDF, an image, or a mix.
Good first Skills to build
- @exit-ticketThree exit-ticket questions from today's lesson
- @tiered-practiceThe same practice at three difficulty levels
- @reading-quizText → comprehension questions with explanations
- @writing-feedbackQuestion-led essay feedback
- @build-rubricA rubric for any task
- @monthly-newsletterMonthly class / parent newsletter
Start with something you do every week. Build one at a time and refine it as you use it.
Common questions
▶ Are Skills harder to write than Gems?
No. The instructions are the same; you just add one sentence about when to use it. What looks hard is usually the SKILL.md file format—but with "Create manually" you just copy and paste, no files involved.
▶ Will I lose my old Gem chats?
No. They stay in your main Gemini chat history.
▶ Can I share a Skill with colleagues?
Yes, via Google Drive. But there's no "make a copy" button—to adapt someone else's Skill, download it, re-upload it and customize it. Run it through the "Check Shared Skills" tab before importing.
▶ Can I assign a Skill to students?
Not in Classroom. For student-facing AI you can monitor, use Guided Learning or Gemini Notebook.
▶ When can school accounts use Skills?
According to Google for Education's transition guide, Skills roll out in the Gemini app for education users starting October 13, 2026—though it still depends on your school admin's settings.
▶ I typed @ but only see a single "Skills" entry, no list.
It means your account has no active skills yet. Create one first—with this tool's Convert or Build tab, or by adding a recommended skill under Settings → Skills in Gemini. Type @ again and you'll see a "Skills" heading with your skill listed. Skills converted from Gems start as drafts and need to be activated too.
▶ Do Skills work with Canvas or Deep Research?
Not yet. Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning, and video and music generation don't work with Skills for now. If your Gem depends on them, keep using the Gem for now.
